Inspired by the success of this site, the Seattle Great City Initiative has started a new website -- my.greatcity.org. We thought about just taking this site and evolving it into the new site, but we decided it was cleaner to start fresh with a new community site. However, we really want all of the members of this site to come over to my.greatcity.org and share your ideas, projects and passion with the people there.
The topics are intended to be broader than just parks and open space. We want t…

A few people have asked me about the tax rate for the Parks Levy, as the ballot title is a little confusing. The Parks Levy will cost the median priced home about $81 a year, about $30 a year less than the expiring levy. The ballot title also mentions an overall limit on property taxes of $2.60, but that includes all other city taxes. That amount is not the rate for the parks levy.
By the way, city property taxes per $1000 assessed valuation have declined over time. Check out www.timburgess.com…

I wrote this for the Seattle Parks and Open Space Advocates listserver:
Dear POSA Lurkers and Regulars,
I’ll be voting Yes and encouraging my friends to vote Yes on Prop 2. The sign is in my yard.
I started Fremont Peak Park which was a Pro Parks Levy Opportunity Fund project. It was also a gorgeous property that was about to fall to the real estate market and become one family’s mansion with a stellar view. Now it has a stream of visitors day and night, who take the view in at no charge. Tha…

As we reach the home stretch of the campaign (and get hit with lame attempts by the Mayor to tell us why he's NOT voting for the levy), we want to know why you ARE voting for the levy.
This is this spot to do it. Make a statement, like the one below from
Joyce Moty. Add photos to your statement, or, you can even make a short video of why you are voting for the levy. It's a quick, fun way to let others know why we need this levy to pass!
I am supporting this parks levy because there…

A great letter to the editor by Jim Jensen was printed in the Sunday paper this weekend. Nice job Jim!
Here's the text:
PROPOSITION 2
Mayor wrong to say to no to parks
I disagree with Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels. We must maintain the momentum we now have in support of parks, trails and green spaces in Seattle. Land is not getting cheaper, and development of megahouses, condos and apartments continues to bring people and cars to our city. We need to keep adding parks and open spaces to maintain…

A Seattle PI story today mentions how the Mayor will vote against the parks levy because of too many taxes. Unfortunately growth isn't stopping and we need to invest in neighborhood parks to keep our communities livable. Plus, public parks are exactly the type of community asset we need to improve when more people will be staying local to relax and recreate.
We need your voices out there! Please write a letter to the edit…

I was surprised by how much fun I had doing a literature drop in Wallingford this week. I did two sessions, one in the evening and one in the late morning. Both times I ran into lots of people with children in strollers, some of whom were returning from Gas Works Park. It was fun to tell them that the Levy includes funds for playground improvements at Gas Works, and they were very interested in that prospect.
Lesson learned: If you plan to do a literature drop, it will be much more fun for you…
